ABC Warriors

The only Warrior who gives Ro-Jaws a run for his money in the 'hardly changed in the last twenty years' stakes is Mongrol...
Mongrol manages (in my opinion at least) to look simultaneously like both an ape and a walrus, and it's fair to assume that both creatures were sourced by O'Neill in his original design for the ex-paratrooper, although there's an unmistakeable hint of squash-faced bulldog in there somewhere, too...

Mongrol wasn't always the big loveable ape we know. Before his re-building by Lara, he liked to do things...

Both of the above images are by Mike McMahon, and provide an interesting contrast to his rendition featured in The Tripods (Progs 1240 - 1242), pictured left...

For the next twenty years, Mongrol refused to have a face-lift, and pretty much kept the ape/walrus look...

About the only change he seems to have gone through is the thinning of his legs...

Although we'd seen Mongrol in colour in the 1985 annual (courtesy of Alan Moore and Steve Dillon, with the supurb colours supplied by John Higgins), we also got him in colour on the cover of the first ABC Warriors collection from Titan, courtesy of Kevin O'Neill (right)...

However, it wasn't until the cover of Prog 556 (by Simon Bisley) that we got the definitive colour guide for Mongrol...

By the time we got to Hellbringer (by Pat Mills, Tony Skinner and Kevin Walker), Mongrol had had a brand new paint job, losing the red sections for a completely yellow body, and an interesting line in bondage gear...

It seems that Walker became completely sold on the Mongrol-as-a-bulldog design, something that merely served to underline the character's subservient, pet-like relationship with Morrigun...

During The Clone Cowboys (Progs 1237 - 1239), Liam McCormack-Sharpe gave us one of the most stylish images of Mongrol from the entire 'Return to Mars' storyline...

However, McCormack-Sharpe also produced one of the worst images of Mongrol yet (right), something that resmebles an obsese Pac-Man.

A lesson to all the pill-munchers out there?

Henry Flint gave us the first Mongrol in monochrome, as well as some first class smushing action...
Last honourable mentions go to Tom Artis and Doug Hazlewood for their rendition of Mongrol on the #1 cover of the ABC Warriors reprint series from Fleetway/Quality (below left) and Rich Larson for his #4 cover (below right)...
