| For the
Lord of the Flies, changing appearance is almost second nature, and with
Kevin O'Neill directing Nemesis' looks, such appearances were never short of revolutionary... |

Left, is one of Kevin O'Neill's early design for The Warlock, while on the right is his first full body appearance in 2000AD. As you can see, the only features kept from this design were the legs and the jagged demonic style... Both Mills and O'Neill determined that Nemesis should look like something out of hell, a completely Satanic-looking hero, in-keeping with Mills' philosophy of screwing with the readers' minds" - that is, suborning them into challenging accepted norms and values. Back then 2000AD was still classified as a childrens' comic and Nemesis' appearance was probably informed as much by the desire of Mills and O'Neill to upset the editors and managerial staff at IPC as by the demands of the story.

| The Warlock's basic design is something of an equine swordfish. Only Kev O'Neill could depart so much from convention in creating such a memorable, evil look for a protagonist... and only O'Neill could manage to create in Torquemada such an equally striking lost twin of an antagonist for Nemesis. | ||
| However, with the very poor Book 2: The Alien Alliance, we got an equally poor rendition of Nemeis from Jesus Redondo (below), which failed to capture the darkness and insanity of the series in the same was as O'Neill did... | ||

| Any doubts about his fashion sense were dispelled with his choice of suit for his second wedding. Very few comic characters could pull off the 'Don Johnson' look, but Nemesis does it well... | |||

| When it came to the battlefield, Nemesis was also ahead of the pack. During The Gothic Empire, he also debuted his new leather armour (below)... | But with Book 5: The Vengeance of Thoth, he debuted another version of his leather armour (below), this time forgoing the cape for some badges and bigger shoulder pads... | |

| David Roach gave us a slightly more realistic looking Nemesis in Book 8: Purity's Story, who'd apparently forgone clothes for the more natural look... | John Hicklenton showed Nemesis was ahead of the pack again in the fashion stakes, with The Warlock donning a cool overcoat long before Keanu Reeves had even heard of William Gibson... | |

While Roach offered a more organic and realistic take on Nemesis, Hicklenton was the first artist to attribute a beer belly to him, which complemented - and complimented - the character's bovva boy fashion and the story's dark, punk-London context. |
