  SIMON BISLEY

Bisley's first professional comic work appeared in 2000AD in 1987, after Pat Mills saw his artwork and was impressed enough to request him as artist on the ABC Warriors series Black Hole. He went on to paint Sláine: The Horned God, and the Heavy Metal Dredd series (which first appeared in Rock Power magazine, and was subsequently translated into many languages, before being reprinted in Judge Dredd Megazine vol I).

Like many other of his contemporaries, Biz moved stateside, to work on the first Lobo mini-series for DC, then the first Batman / Judge Dredd crossover, with Alan Grant and John Wagner. His work has also appeared in Heavy Metal and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  MIKE McMAHON

Undoubtedly one of the 2000AD greats, McMahon's art has been some of the most influential, with echoes of his work on the classic early episodes of Judge Dredd evident in dozens of subsequent interpretations. The comic was McMahon's first professional work out of art college. Although Carlos Ezquerra created the look of Dredd, it was McMahon who drew the first adventure to be published, in Prog 2.

The celebrated McMahon style of big boots and crumpled clothes soon developed, making him one of the most popular Dredd artists, alongside the polished rendering of Brian Bolland. He also had stints on Ro-busters and ABC warriors, and designed the look of the villainous favourites The Angel Gang.

But McMahon was not content with repeating himself forever (his last Dredd story for 12 years was the first 2 episodes of Block Mania) and went on to develop a new style when drawing the first, full length series of Sláine. His style has mutated several times since, but his work has mostly been for American comics companies. He returned to the character he helped make great, drawing a four-part Dredd adventure called Howler for the Judge Dredd Megazine in 1994.

Twenty years on, McMahon came back to the ABC Warriors for the three part story The Tripods (Progs 1240-1242) in 2001.

  KEVIN O'NEILL

Starting his career as an office boy on Buster, O'Neill quickly progressed to art editor on the early issues of 2000AD, before heading into the world of freelancing. He created, wrote and drew Bonjo From Beyond the Stars (prog 41-49) and Dash Decent (prog 178-198), as well as co-creating Nemesis the Warlock, Metalzoic and Marshall Law with Pat Mills.

He has also worked with Alan Moore on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in the States, and has revived his writing career with a new character, John Pain. His work has also graced Batman and Green Lantern.

His anarchic style has brought him the unusual accolade of being banned by America's Comics Code Authority.

  BRENDAN McCARTHY

McCarthy is an innovative artist who has worked for both small and adventurous independent publishers as well as some of the major companies. His work has been seen across several series, including Zenith and Judge Dredd for 2000AD and Shade the Changing Man for DC.

A frequent collaborator with Peter Milligan, two of their best works finally found a muchly deserved wider audience: the contorversial graphic novel Skin (first published in Crisis in 1989) was finally published after waiting several years to find a new home, while the multi-textured Rogan Gosh (first serialsed in Fleetway's late Revolver monthly) was finally picked up by DC.

  KEVIN WALKER

After spending time designing confectionary packaging, Walker picked up his first professional comics work with Future Shocks. This gave way to Rogue Trooper: Cinnabar and Harlem Heroes with Steve Dillon, before he finally made the move into full-time comics work with ABC Warriors: Khronicles of Khaos. The co-creator of Inspectre for Judge Dredd Megzine, he's also worked on the Dredd story Fast Food and Judge Anderson: Childhood's End with Alan Grant. In 1993, Walker was one of the team of designers brought in to help the Judge Dredd movie come to life, but let's not hold that against him...

After the conclusion of ABC Warriors: Hellbringer, Walker decided to move on to other projects, including artwork for Games Workshop and Wizards of the Coast. He returned to the Mek-Nificent Seven in 1999 for the Prog 2000 Special, and then an ABC Warriors cover for Prog 1248.

  S.M.S.

The mysteriously named S.M.S. (apparently pronounced Smuzz) lives in Lancashire in a house that is bigger on the inside than on the outside. He illustrates for a number of science fiction magazines, most notably Interzone, where he has topped the reader's poll as favourite artist many times. He also won the 1997 British Science Fiction Award for best artwork. Work on comic strips includes the ABC Warriors tale Black Hole for 2000AD (with Pat Mills and Simon Bisley), an adaptation of the Clive Barker Hellraiser story 'Original Sin', and most recently architectural backgrounds for Bryan Talbot's graphic novel Heart of Empire.

Black Hole is the only 2000AD work ever produced by S.M.S.

Some of his artwork can be found at The Dragonfly Fly Gallery.

BRETT EWINS

After leaving Goldsmiths College in 1977 with a BA in conceptual art, Ewins went on to produce covers for 2000AD, before progressing on to the interiors. He drew his first episode of Judge Dredd in the classic The Day the Law Died (aka Judge Cal). From that work came more Judge Dredds, including The DNA Men, before moving on to Judge Anderson, ABC Warriors, Rogue Trooper, and most notably Bad Company.

Across the pond, he created Strange Days and Johnny Nemo for Eclipse back in 1985, with Peter Milligan. He has also worked on Swamp Thing, Hellblazer and Secret Origins for DC.

Formerly editor and publisher on Deadline magazine, he has also worked on animation projects.

Ewins now spends his time painting and has enjoyed several exhibitions of his work.

  DAVE GIBBONS

Gibbons is another 20+ year veteran of British comics, who actually drew one of the strips in Prog 1, Harlem Heroes. He drew long runs of that series and Dan Dare, as well co-creating Rogue Trooper. After hopping across the pond, he worked on Batman and Green Lantern for DC, as well as the critically acclaimed Watchmen with Alan Moore way back in 1986.

Making a mark as a writer, he scripted the first series of a new-look Rogue Trooper, The War Machine (Art by Will Simpson - prog #650-687) for 2000AD and Batman vs Predator for DC and Darkhorse. Now he is part of the Darkhorse Legend imprint, and has worked with Frank Miller on the Martha Washington series.

  JOHN HIGGINS

Higgins got his start both writing and illustrating Future Shocks for early issues of 2000AD. Now a popular artist in his own right, he rose to prominence for his gorgeous colouring. He coloured two of the 1980's best comic projects, the ground breaking Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke, both for DC.

He has drawn and painted many episodes of Judge Dredd (including the beginnings of the Democracy saga, back when Dredd had the colour centrefold in a black and white comic); he's also scripted and painted a two part Dredd story, Scales of Justice (prog 884-885). As well as painting the 28-page Dredd - Rogue special, he's illustrated Pride & Joy and Hellblazer for Vertigo, and contributed some covers to DCs second Judge Dredd series, Legends of the Law.

  BRYAN TALBOT

After leaving college, Talbot worked in the underground press for five years, creating, writing and drawing Brainstrom Comix for Alchemy Press. In 1978 Talbot started the epic sage The Adventures of Luther Arkwright for Near Myths, later to be re-printed and expanded in 1981. A variety of other works came and went, and in 1983, Talbot began work for 2000AD.

In collaboration with Pat Mills, he produced three books of Nemesis the Warlock, the first of which, Book 4: The Gothic Empire, won an Eagle Award for 'Best Graphic Novel' and 'Best Villain' for Torquemada. He also worked on Judge Dredd projects with Alan Grant and John Wagner, which included a 20-page strip in the RPG magazine Diceman.

Talbot went back to Luther Arwright in the late 80's and picked up a variety of Eagle Awards for the series, as well as multitude of devoted fans across the world. His other works over the years are simply too numerous to list, but his reputation as one of the most talented Brits in the industry has been firmly established.

  CARLOS SANCHEZ EZQUERRA

Probably most well known for being the co-creator of Judge Dredd, the Spanish artist has been working in British comics from 1971, and up until 1987 worked almost exclusively for Fleetway. As well as Dredd, Ezqurra also designed the hugely popular Strontium Dog series for Starlord (1978), as well as Third World War for Crisis.

He has moved to Andorra but continues his residency drawing Judge Dredd, racking up epics like The Apocalypse War, Necropolis, Wilderlands and Judgement Day. With John Wagner, he created Fleetway's first creator owned series, Al's Baby.

Ezquerra has also worked with Garth Ennis on the Bloody Mary and Saint of Killers mini-series, and with Alan Grant on a handful of Lobo projects, all for DC. He returned to Mega City 1 in 2001 for the twelve part Helter-Skelter, with Garth Ennis.
